What are Bird Spikes?
Bird spikes are physical bird deterrent devices made from durable materials such as stainless steel or polycarbonate. They feature a series of long, needle-like rods that protrude from a base strip. Install these spikes on ledges, rooflines, signs, beams, gutters, and other surfaces where birds typically perch or roost.
Functionality
The primary function of these spikes is to prevent birds—especially larger species like pigeons, seagulls, and crows—from landing and nesting on treated surfaces. The spikes are non-lethal and are designed to be a humane deterrent. The angled rods make it physically uncomfortable or impossible for birds to gain footing, prompting them to relocate without causing harm.

Where to Use Spikes:
These spikes are ideal for areas where bird droppings, nesting, and perching cause health risks, property damage, or aesthetic issues. Common application points include:
- Roof ledges and parapets
- Window sills and balconies
- Building signs and letters
- Outdoor lights and cameras
- Gutter edges and drainage pipes
- Air conditioning units and vents
- Beams and rafters in open structures (e.g., warehouses or parking garages)
Bird Spikes at Bird Solutions
Spikes are rarely the proper choice. Spikes are our least used bird control option because of smaller birds’ tendencies to build nests in the spikes, making matters worse. Bird spikes are typically the choice of companies without proper training to use better-adapted exclusion devices. It is also the item we most commonly remove because someone who simply didn’t know better installed them in an effort to solve their bird problem. This often happens because of the simplicity of their installation.
